african-american male, last night's assault a white guy with a heavy beard. they aren't close at all. but if the suspects are different, the fear is the same. >> i love it here. i'm just sad to hear that people are getting raped here. again. >> reporter: between the two of them, michelle anderson and marla samuels have called the apartments home for 20 years, and never have any plans to change this anytime soon. >> i still like it here. i just want us to be safer. >> reporter: you can't blame samuels for thinking her complex was, indeed, safer after a string of assaults earlier this summer, police arrested the man they say was responsible, antonio mouton. he now sits in jail, held there by $12 million bail. what's more, following the assaults, the complex's management increased the number of security guards working at the park regency. still, at around 6:00 last night, a 27-year-old woman called the sheriff's office to report she had been sexually

assaulted. >> as she opened her door and entered her apartment, someone came in behind her and forced his way in. >> reporter: the contra costa sheriff's department believes this is not evidence that the park regency complex is unsafe. they do, after all, have security guards, a neighborhood watch, and security cameras. what this latest assault proves to them, though, is that no one, regardless of their circumstances should ever take their safety for granted. >> the bottom line is you can never lower your guard, and this type of incident can happen anywhere at any time. >> reporter: you saw, of course, the security cameras. what the sheriff's office tells us is they are going through the security camera footage last night to see if they can come up with any picture to help them identify a suspect. if they find it, they'll pass it to us and we'll show it to you. live from walnut creek, garvin thomas. now to the latest on that deadly gas explosion in san bruno. disturbing revelations tonight

as pg&e admits that corrosion was detected in the pipeline involved in that blast. the utility now says the damage was repaired last year, but now some are wondering if it still played a role in that explosion. nbc bay area's tracy grant is in san bruno with the story. that must be unsettling news for the people that live there, tracy. >> reporter: oh, it is, jessica, very unsettling. everywhere you look there's an unsettling sight here in san bruno. we're right here next to some of the property that didn't make it through the fire. we're going to turn our camera a little bit so you can get a better look. it's a sad sight, that's for sure. many of the people who are still here in this neighborhood are wondering when they're going to find out more about what caused the explosion. pg&e told us today that they did have to make a repair on the pipe that ran right through this neighborhood. >> you hear any noise and you jump. something fell on my porch the other day and i went about that

far up. >> reporter: emile chalks it up to nerves. he says that's probably why another san bruno school was evacuated today, the second school in a 24-hour period. pg&e showed up at crest memorial elementary school this morning after someone reported smelling gas just blocks away from where a gas explosion ripped through the neighborhood last week. students and staff were sent home early, and pg&e says crews tested the area but could not identify a gas leak. >> we also know the heater was turned on for the first time, and sometimes when that happens that can cause the smell of gas. >> reporter: that explanation may have calmed the fears of some san bruno residents, but there's another issue that many want addressed. pg&e has confirmed that corrosion was detected in line 132, the gas pipeline that blew up last week. spokesman smith says liquids, mostly oil and some water, caused the corrosion found in the pipes. smith says the utility discovered it during one of its regularly scheduled inspections, requested funding for repairing

the corrosion and completed the repairs in 2009. smith says whether it has any connection to why the explosion took place is something the ntsb will have to decide. >> corrosion can ultimately cause the eroding of metal with metal pipes so, that's why there is the concern and that's exactly why it's something that we continually inspect for. >> reporter: now, smith says crews looked for corrosion again in march of this year, and that pipe passed the inspection. live in san bruno, tracy grant. friends and family got together today to remember two of the people killed in that explosion. hundreds of people gathered at a church in san francisco to remember jacqueline greg and her 13-year-old daughter, janessa. people who spoke today talked about how they were a model family. >> you were the family that we all aspired to be like.

you were a wonder. family, kind, giving, compassionate, gentle, warm and loving. today your family has bloomed a thousand fold. >> jacqueline's husband and son or rather daughter were not home when that explosion did happen. and stay with nbc bay area news for continuing coverage of the san bruno explosion. we'll also have a special section on our website at nbcbayarea.com. new tonight here at 5:00, a bay area high school student is dead, four others very injured after a car crash in novato. it happened before noon on novato boulevard just west of san marin drive. police say those students were in a bmw that spun out of control and then onto the path of an oncoming tractor-trailer that was hauling cattle. now, why the students were not in school is one of the many questions still not being answered. but police now say that alcohol may have played a role in that accident. investigators say they found

empty alcohol containers in an around the car. the students were reported by enrolled in novato high school. now, the driver of the trailer suffered minor injuries, but there was a huge backup there on that highway for hours this afternoon. turning your attention now to the economy, and the latest numbers on unfloimt. california's unemployment rate rose slightly last month as the dismal economy erased more jobs here in the bay area. the state unemployment rate inched up to 12.4% last month, the unemployment rate one year ago stood at 12%. in all, the state lost more than 33,000 jobs. 3,800 were many the bay area. the east bay lost 2,000 jobs, the peninsula, san francisco, and marin lost a combined 2,700. the south bay actually gained some employment. two high-profile political candidates are getting some star power on the campaign trail. former president bill clinton will make a trip to california next month to campaign for a democratic candidate jerry brown and gavin newsom.

that announcement comes the same week over comments by brown over clinton's honesty. brown responded to an ad which showed clinton criticizing brown when the two were running for the democratic nomination for president. brown has apologized and clinton has endorsed him. nbc bay area will be airing a debate on october 12th. tom brokaw will moderate that deat dominican university san rafael. it will be covered on our web site, nbcbayarea.com. nothing to report, the word from the latest round of budget talks at the state capitol. they made little progress. the 79 days without a budget. they're not expected to meet this weekend and are set to reconvene on monday. still no word tonight on when those two american hikers left behind in iranian prison may be released. but hillary clinton is calling for officials to let them go.

the angel island was once known as the ellis island of the west. it was also known as a nightmare for thousands of chinese immigrants held on that island when they arrived in the united states. but as nbc bay area's joe rosato jr. shows us, the special ceremony today brought together their bitter past with a hopeful future. >> reporter: 100 years ago, a boat ride to the angel island immigration station would have been a journey of fear and dread for new immigrants. >> u.s. citizenship -- >> reporter: but for 25 soon-to-be u.s. citizens this year with a piece of the american dream. >> it has a really true meaning for us because my husband's grandfather was actually held here when he tried to come from china. >> reporter: to mark the immigration station's centennial, the government held a naturalization ceremony on the island. new citizen cheng, who came from

taiwan, brought her daughter to witness her swearing-in. >> they were born as american. they don't know how lucky they are. and for all those people who want to be american citizen and how many things they have to go through and how difficult it is. >> reporter: the ceremony took place in the shadow of the old barracks where mostly chinese immigrants spent months and years waiting to join loved ones in the u.s. >> so it's sort of a fitting occasion to be at a place where historically people were excluded but today are being included. >> reporter: but as much as the ceremony reflected changing times, the hardships some face to get here were as difficult as ever. >> sometimes you eat, sometimes you don't eat. >> reporter: mohammed sent years in a somalia refugee camp before getting the chance to come to the u.s. >> today you can say my shoes tied and cell phone on my waist.

i mean, i never thought i would have this in my life. >> reporter: for felicia lowe, whose father was detained at angel island, the chance to see new sit tenths make a new start in the u.s. was a fitting tribute. >> so to see a ceremony out here today really underscores the beauty of america, that we can learn from our mistakes, that we can turn things around. >> reporter: joe rosato jr., nbc bay area news. congratulations. those 25 citizens represent 17 different countries. 9,000 people across the u.s. were naturalized today as part of citizenship day. >> organizers want san francisco's annual bay to breakers event to be less like mardi gras and more like a footrace. starting next year, the race will be dry. critics have been trying to tame that wild celebration for years now, complaining about drunkenness, litter, and public urination. another new rule -- police and secure teams will escort anyone who is not registered for that race off the course. typically, some 20,000 people

finish the race. but an extra 25,000 to 50,000 attend. also the number of registrants will be capped at 50,000. in health news tonight, research from uc, berkeley, find girls living in a home without a biological father tend to hit puberty at an early age. the average age has reached in recent years partly because of the childhood obesity epidemic. girl who is weigh more tend to start that process earlier. the berkeley study of over 400 girls linked early onset of puberty to the absence of fathers but only those living in high-income households researchers say more work is needed on the subject. women around the world are becoming more educated, and that's helping save the lives of hair children. the university of washington study found especially in poor, underdeveloped country, the better educated a mother was the more likely she was to understand prevention and the benefits of vaccines and mosquito nets. also more likely to take a sick child to a clinic early on and

follow treatment instructions. they also tend to understand more about how germs are spread and the importance of sanitation. well, a new report says we here on the west coast are not as prepared as we should be for is a tsunami. warning systems improved after giant waves swept through resorts and villages in the indian ocean following the 2004 earthquake. but experts at the scripps institution of oceanography in la jolla say more ocean sensors and public education is needed. one offshore quake could send high water crashing into coastal washington, oregon, and northern california within minutes. and without enough time for local authorities to evacuate. well, guess what? jeff ranieri is wining and dining, of course. >> of course. it's friday. >> i love the art and wine festival in lafayette, jeff. been there many times. it's fun. >> it's already getting set up, ladies. is sun out about as bright as my

chance of widespread showers from the north bay to the south bay. that will linger through the afternoon and evening hours. total on the low side from a trace to right around a tenth of an inch. that is for sunday. once again for the best chance of scattered showers. tonight, mid to upper 50s, a little bit of humidity in the air. that system is picking up some southwesterly flow, which is making it sticky out there. meanwhile, for the festival, we have a look here on saturday when it does begin. temperatures will be in the upper 60s to low and mid-70s throughout the duration. we'll see partly cloudy skies but those showers should be holding off. and various things, lots of wineries, microbrews and eve an lot of stuff for your kids to do out here as well. seven-day forecast, it has it warming up for first day of fall. looks like temperatures will appropriately be going back into the 80s. so we talked about around here at the restaurant here in lafayette in the east bay, and we have executive chef stuart

and passengers are being booked on other flights. it is not clear where that smoke was coming from, but we are told it did not affect the operations of the flight. the mother of missing teenager natalee holloway topped wednesday with prime suspect jor van der sloot van inside the peruvian prison where he's being held. beth holloway went in to with a dutch journalist and spoke to van der sloot for a few minutes. she told van der sloot she had no hate for him. van der sloot then gave her his attorney's business card and he was removed because she didn't have permission to be there in the first place. on the "today" show, twit ti's lawyer says she did not consult with him before going to that prison. >> beth knows i'm very measure and cautious and if she asked me what i thought, she might not like the response or i'd ask her to think about it a little more. >> you would have advised her not to do it? >> not necessarily. i think she made up her mind and didn't want to hear anything to the contrary. >> van der sloot is being held

in connection with the death of a peruvian woman, 21-year-old stephany flores. he remains the only suspect in the disappearance of natalee holloway in aroo ba. in florida, a case of school bullying ended badly with the parent of the child being bullied in trouble. this is video from the bus where kids were ride taken two weeks ago. it shows the father of a girl boarding the bus and asking the child which kids on the bus were bullying her. the he then approached that child, shouting. >> this is my daughter! and i will [ bleep ] to stand by her. >> parents don't agree to have that bus detained by a stranger and their children to be subjected to such behavior. >> now the father says that the girl was being constantly harassed on that bus. police in the school district say she never officially complained about the bullying. the seminole county sheriff's office may seek charges against him for disorderly misconduct,
